B.Com vs. B.Com (Hons.): What’s The Difference?

"For a commerce student, a question that puzzles them the most is the difference between B.Com and B.Com (Hons.). The field of study is the same for both courses, but the structure, learning methodology, cut-offs and career scope differs. In this article, I have discussed the differences between both in detail."

Choosing a college is a big thing in a student's life. And, when you are a commerce student, then to choose out of so many career options is in itself a challenge to overcome. However, the career scope in the field is lucrative. But there is one question that puzzles all the commerce students, and we will be discussing it today.

I am sure you must have wondered while researching about a college when you would have found two programmes with similar names. And yes, you are right! I am talking about B.Com and B.Com (Honours). The difference between these two courses is a question that baffles students.

Don't worry here; I am helping you out by answering this most asked question. After thorough research, I have mentioned the differences in both programmes.

So, scroll down fast and read out these differences in detail.

Curriculum:

B.Com and B.Com (Hons.) both will cover all the subjects of commerce field. B.Com will give you an overview of the stream in all aspects. And B.Com (Hons.) with covering all the subjects will also allow students to choose a particular subject and specialize in it in the final year. So the structure differs in both, though subjects are more or less the same.

Students can specialize in accounting, finance, economics, etc. in B.Com (Hons.), which B.Com does not facilitate. To give you an example, if economics is the subject you love and wish to pursue a career in, then B.Com (Hons.) is the right choice to go for as you can specialize in economics.

Objective:

B.Com will teach you trade and enhance your knowledge in the stream. It will help you develop managerial skills in specific areas of business studies. B.Com (Hons.) is a business-oriented programme that will help gain business skills and provide in-depth knowledge. It works as a foundation for higher professional courses like CA, CFA, ICWA, etc.

The learning methods in both programmes vary. You will get more practical learning in B.Com (Hons.) B.Com as it facilitates learning through applications, management games, case studies etc.

Duration, Eligibility and Admission:

Duration - B.Com and B.Com (Hons.), both are 3-year undergraduate programmes.

Eligibility - For admission in both the courses, students must have cleared 10+2.

Admission - To seek admission in any of this course, cut-offs are different. Cut-off in B.Com (Hons.) is much higher compared to the cut-off in B.Com. Cut-offs for admissions varies from college to college.

For both, duration and eligibility are the same. The only difference is in the admission procedure.

Degree Value:

B.Com degree does not hold much value in the market unless you have studied further business courses. Also, the job opportunities are limited, for B.Com pass outs in terms of offers and payscale. B.Com (Hons.) because of the specialization it offers has higher value in the market. The experts from industry value this course, and the opportunities and pay scales are higher from entry-level itself.

So, when choosing any one of both, make sure that you keep in mind what value the degrees hold because eventually, you will work in the corporate world, right.

Career Prospects:

The career prospects are high and worthy in B.Com only if you have pursued business courses like M.Com and MBA. On the other hand, B.Com (Hons.) works as a base course for professional courses like CA, and specialization courses will help you get lucrative packages and opportunities in banking, accounting, finance, etc.

Hence, make a wise decision and choose according to your career plans.

All in All, B.Com and B.Com (Hons.), both are potential programmes to study for a successful career. Just make sure you choose a programme that is suitable for your career path.

You can check out B.Com and B.Com (Hons.) programmes of Marwadi University. In my view, it is the current best college when it comes to academics, and it has been accredited with a NAAC A+ certificate also, which assures quality education.
